Buakaw: WMC Ambassador

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last 20 years then it is likely you will have heard the name Buakaw, the most famous muaythai fighter to date. A national hero in Thailand Buakaw is known across the world not only in the muaythai world but as an advocate for sports and for his acting roles.

Sombat Banchamek (real name) hails from the Surin province and began fighting under the name Buakaw Por Pramuk where he entered the Bangkok stadium scene to acquire such titles as Omnoi champion and Lumpinee champion to name a few.

Buakaw quickly rose to fame in the Japanese K1 championship where he became 2 time champion developing a huge fan base of combat sport fans from around the globe.

In 2006 Buakaw faced Jomhod Kiatadisak for the WMC World Super Welterweight title emerging victorious, then in 2007 retained the title following a bout against Italian Giorgio Petryosan.

In 2009 he won the WMC Mad Super Welterweight title against John Wayne Parr from Australia.

Fast forward to 2011 and he became the Thai Fight champion before facing Warren Stevelmans in the same year from South Africa for the WMC World Junior Middleweight title in the USA.

In 2012 following an ongoing dispute he left the Por Pramuk gym and begin using his real name Banchamek which is also the name of a gym named after him.

Then in 2014 Buakaw defeated Djime Coulibaly from France for the WMC World Junior Middle weight title and went on to retain the title the following year against Yuan Bin from China.

Aside from his many fighting accolades Buakaw is proud to be the Ambassador for the UN lead Social Campaign ‘He for She’ which aims to tackle gender equality.

The WMC is honoured to have Buakaw in the family as a champion a hero and also a friend.
